[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) is accelerating the enhancement of digital technology together with the Korean Register (KR).

DSME announced on the 19th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with KR for the "Development of Digitalization and Smart & Autonomous Ship Technology."

According to the agreement, the two organizations will form a joint working council and collaboratively promote research utilizing digital technology and the development of smart and autonomous ship-related technologies.

The key projects include ▲ development of smart ship services to improve ship operation safety and efficiency ▲ development and demonstration of autonomous navigation technology ▲ joint development of crew training content ▲ digital collaboration for realizing a smart yard.

DSME plans to lead research and technology development activities by utilizing its self-developed smart ship platform 'DS4' and data-based systems. KR is the only internationally accredited classification society in Korea. Last month, it also opened the Integrated Inspection Support Center (ISC) based on ship big data.

Park Doo-sun, CEO of DSME, said, "The company is focusing on realizing its ongoing digital transformation strategy as a source of competitiveness and dedicating its research activities to future-oriented smart ship and smart yard technology development."
