[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] Dongwon Systems is expanding its aseptic beverage business, selected as a future new growth engine, by establishing a second aseptic beverage plant in the Ucheon Industrial Complex, Hoengseong, Gangwon Province.
On the afternoon of the 18th, Dongwon Systems announced that it signed an investment agreement for the establishment of the second aseptic beverage plant with Gangwon Province and Hoengseong County at the Gangwon Provincial Office. Attendees included Choi Moon-soon, Governor of Gangwon Province; Ahn Jung-gi, Acting Mayor of Hoengseong County; Park In-gu, Vice Chairman of Dongwon Group; and Seo Beom-won, Head of Dongwon Systems Packaging Division.
Through this agreement, Dongwon Systems will invest approximately 80 billion KRW on its 5,300-pyeong site to operate the production line starting in 2024, aiming to establish the second aseptic beverage plant. This will create employment opportunities for local talent and contribute to revitalizing the regional economy, while Gangwon Province and Hoengseong County will provide related administrative support.
The aseptic filling method involves sterilizing beverages at ultra-high temperatures and filling them into PET containers through aseptic equipment that prevents external bacterial contamination. This process ensures hygienic beverages without long heat treatment, preserving the original taste and nutrients of the raw materials. It allows safer and more hygienic production of beverages prone to bacterial growth during distribution, such as grain and dairy beverages, and uses about 20% less plastic compared to regular PET beverages, making it environmentally friendly.
Since February 2018, Dongwon Systems has identified the aseptic beverage business, recognized as a future high value-added industry, as a new growth engine and invested about 140 billion KRW to complete the first plant capable of producing approximately 290 million bottles annually. The first plant secured industry-leading quality by importing differentiated equipment and technology verified in advanced countries such as Germany and Japan.
As a result, Dongwon Systems’ aseptic beverage business steadily grew, recording sales of 53.6 billion KRW in the previous year, a 150% increase compared to the prior year, driving overall performance. With the establishment of the second plant, Dongwon Systems aims to develop it into an aseptic beverage production base capable of producing about 460 million bottles annually by 2026, targeting annual sales of 130 billion KRW.
Seo Beom-won, Head of Dongwon Systems Packaging Division, stated, “We plan to actively secure domestic and international customers through differentiated products and services while continuously investing to foster the aseptic beverage business as a new growth engine for the group.”
