Professor Minjun Yang, Head of Environmental Geoscience, selected for the Global Core Talent Development Support Project.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Dooyul] The Department of Environmental Geoscience at Pukyong National University has been selected for the 2022 Global Core Talent Development Support Project by the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP).
The project promotes tasks such as joint research and internships in promising ICT technologies related to the 4th Industrial Revolution and innovative growth leading technologies with overseas universities, research institutes, and companies, establishing a global cooperation network and dispatching domestic master's and doctoral students abroad to enhance global research capabilities.
With the project selection, Pukyong National University will receive support of about 800 million KRW centered on Professor Yang Minjun, the principal investigator of the Department of Environmental Geoscience, to carry out the project.
The project involves professors and researchers from three majors: Environmental Geoscience, Atmospheric Environmental Science, and Geographic Information Systems Engineering.
Pukyong National University will dispatch nine master's and doctoral students from the Department of Environmental Geoscience to the University of Iowa in the United States, which has strengths in environmental fields, artificial intelligence, and atmospheric physics, for six months.
The university plans to conduct joint research with the University of Iowa and nurture global outstanding experts in the field of earth environmental disaster response.
Specific research topics include ▲ tracking sources of fine dust pollution and developing AI-based fine dust concentration estimation models for human health risk assessment ▲ developing algorithms to evaluate marine pollution vulnerability caused by seawater intrusion and submarine groundwater discharge in coastal areas based on big data and AI technologies ▲ developing AI-based algorithms for vulnerability assessment and behavior prediction of pollutants within the geosphere system.
Principal Investigator Professor Yang Minjun said, “Through this project, we will integrate advanced research technologies in big data and artificial intelligence to develop algorithms for assessing vulnerabilities to earth environmental disasters and human health risks based on intelligent information technology, and strive to cultivate excellent talents in this field.”
Last year, Pukyong National University was also selected for the project and dispatched seven master's and doctoral students to Dalhousie University in Canada, leading the way in nurturing talents in advanced ICT technologies and innovative growth leading fields.
