Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Gori Nuclear Power Headquarters has joined hands with the Gijang-gun Seaweed Breeding Convergence Research Center to assist local fishermen facing economic difficulties due to rising coastal water temperatures caused by climate change.

On the 17th, Gori Nuclear Power Headquarters announced on the 18th that it signed an agreement at the Gijang-gun Seaweed Breeding Convergence Research Center in Busan to support the development of aquatic species adapted to high water temperatures.

This project, supported by Gori Nuclear Power Headquarters for four years since 2019 to increase the income of local fishermen, aims to develop seaweed species that can overcome the changing marine environment, as local seaweed and kelp farmers are struggling due to rising water temperatures.

Gori Nuclear Power Headquarters is providing 40 million KRW for indoor cultivation technology research and the purchase of cultivation equipment, while the Gijang-gun Seaweed Breeding Convergence Research Center will provide research results on the production of Gijang-type seaweed seeds through the development of indoor grafting technology to local fishermen.

Kim Jong-i, Director of External Cooperation at Gori Nuclear Power Headquarters, said, “I hope the long-term collaboration between the two institutions will greatly benefit local fishermen,” adding, “Gori Headquarters will actively support projects that can help the local economy and strive to revitalize the sluggish economy.”
