By-election in Gyeonggi Bundang-gap, Ahn Cheol-soo 60.8% vs Kim Byung-kwan 32.1% [Realmeter]

[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] In the by-election for the National Assembly member of 'Gyeonggi Bundang-gap' held together with the June 1 local elections, Ahn Cheol-soo, the candidate from the People Power Party, was found to be leading by a significant margin beyond the margin of error.


On the 18th, Realmeter conducted a survey commissioned by MBN from the 16th to the 17th targeting 807 men and women aged 18 or older residing in Bundang-gu Gap electoral district, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do. The results showed that Ahn Cheol-soo's support rate was 60.8%. Kim Byung-kwan, the candidate from the Democratic Party of Korea, was recorded at 32.1%, with the difference between the two candidates being 28.7 percentage points, which is beyond the margin of error. Respondents who answered that they had 'no preferred candidate' accounted for 3.1%, and those who answered 'don't know' accounted for 4.0%.


When asked which candidate was more likely to win regardless of support, Ahn received 66.1%, while Kim received 27.9%.


Regarding the top priority task that Gyeonggi-do should pursue, 'stabilizing housing prices and other real estate policies' was the highest at 34.4%, followed by 'expansion of transportation infrastructure' at 15.5%, 'attracting businesses and expanding jobs' at 14.3%, and 'solving low birthrate and aging population issues' at 11.3%. Next were 'expanding welfare' at 7.7%, 'improving education and childcare support' at 7.1%, 'COVID-19 quarantine and damage support' at 4.0%, and 'revitalizing cultural tourism industry' at 3.0%.


The response rate for this survey was 5.7%, and the sampling error was ±3.4 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. For more details, please refer to the website of the National Election Survey Deliberation Commission.
