[Naju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Naju City in Jeollanam-do announced on the 18th that the first performance of the city’s traditional Korean music troupe’s Saturday regular concert, ‘A Thousand Years of Music, Naju Pungnyu Yeoljeon,’ will be held on the 21st at Geumseonggwan Dongikheon.
Naju Pungnyu Yeoljeon, a cultural performance representing the historic and cultural city of Naju, offers tourists the charm of the southern region through traditional Korean sounds passed down through generations and various genres of gugak (traditional Korean music) performances.
Now in its 7th year since 2016, the event experienced setbacks with reductions and cancellations over the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic but is scheduled to visit citizens and tourists every Saturday until September 17th, as daily life fully recovers.
The first performance on the 21st will be held from 1:30 PM for one hour at the serene Geumseonggwan Dongikheon, perfectly suited for the gugak atmosphere.
The program includes a dance praying for the nation’s peace and prosperity, ‘Taepyeongseongdae,’ a traditional Korean vocal lesson ‘Beom Naeryeonda,’ a gugak chamber music piece ‘Minyo-ui Hyangyeon,’ ‘Saebom,’ a reinterpretation of a piece by Naju-born gayageum master An Giok arranged for gayageum duo, southern folk songs ‘Sinsacheolga’ and ‘Jindo Arirang,’ and a lively gugak orchestra performance ‘Pannoreum’ featuring exciting samulnori percussion, presenting a colorful stage blending music, dance, and song.
Additionally, a youth gayageum ensemble who began their gugak journey in Naju and children aspiring to be next-generation master vocalists will perform to enrich the stage further.
An official from the city stated, “Pungnyu Yeoljeon has contributed to satisfying citizens’ cultural needs and fostering pride in Naju’s history and culture by presenting high-quality and diverse gugak performances that delight the eyes and ears. We hope that through this performance, which starts alongside the recovery of daily life, everyone will fully enjoy the charm of the southern region’s Pungnyu and the historic city of Naju.”
