Samsung Electronics Unveils Security Solution to Block Installation of Apps Exploited for Voice Phishing

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] Samsung Electronics will unveil a new security solution on the 18th that blocks the installation of malicious smartphone applications (apps) exploited for voice phishing.

This security solution detects malicious code in apps installed through unauthorized channels, such as unofficial app stores, and provides notifications to users in advance.

It blocks the installation of apps confirmed to have been used for voice phishing and displays warning or blocking pop-up alerts when users attempt to install apps from unverified sources. Additionally, smartphone users can check the list of unverified apps and set control options for each app themselves.

After applying the security solution, users can completely block the installation of apps from unknown sources by selecting 'Disallow all' under 'Biometrics and security → Install unknown apps' in the settings mode.

Samsung Electronics plans to provide this solution through a firmware update targeting domestic users of the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S22 series in the first half of the year. Subsequently, the target will be expanded sequentially to all Galaxy smartphones in Korea running One UI 4.1 or higher.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the National Police Agency last October to eradicate voice phishing, and plans to continuously strengthen public-private cooperation systems to respond to evolving malicious apps.
