The 2022 Gwangju Archery World Cup will be held for six days from the 17th to the 22nd, starting with the men's and women's compound preliminary matches.
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The 2022 Gwangju Archery World Cup will be held over six days until the 22nd.
The Archery World Cup is considered one of the three major international archery competitions alongside the Summer Olympics and the World Archery Championships.
It is held five times annually in major countries across continents, with the top eight archers in each category (Recurve and Compound individual events) from the first to fourth stages qualifying for the final round held at the fifth stage (Mexico).
Since Korean athletes did not participate in the first stage due to overlapping with the national team selection schedule, their qualification for the final round is determined by their results in the second to fourth stages.
At the second stage held in Gwangju, 270 athletes from 38 countries compete fiercely.
The preliminary and main rounds (17th to 20th) take place at the Gwangju International Archery Field, and the finals (21st to 22nd) are held at Gwangju Women's University, the cradle of Korean women's archery.
On the first day of the competition, compound events for men and women will be held from 2:00 PM to 5:10 PM during the qualification round. Each archer shoots 72 arrows at a target 50 meters away (perfect score 720 points).
The qualification round determines the rankings from first place to the last, which are then used to set the matchups for the main rounds.
In the recurve category, athletes such as An San, the triple gold medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, along with Choi Mi-sun, Kang Chae-young, and Lee Ga-hyun (women), and Kim Woo-jin, Kim Je-deok, Oh Jin-hyek, and Lee Woo-seok (men) are participating.
In the compound category, Kim Yoon-hee, Song Yoon-soo, So Chae-won, and Oh Yoo-hyun (women), and Kim Jong-ho, Yang Je-won, Choi Yong-hee, and Kang Dong-hyun (men) are competing for medals.
This competition, which strongly serves as a precursor to the '2025 Gwangju World Championships', is the first international event held after the lifting of COVID-19 social distancing measures, and with archery stars such as An San and Kim Je-deok participating, it is attracting great interest from citizens.
The preliminary and main rounds can be freely viewed from the second-floor stands of the International Archery Field, and the finals require reservation for viewing. The finals will be broadcast live on SPOTV.
