Chosun University Rose Garden Reopens After 3 Years Due to COVID-19 Impact

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Chosun University Rose Garden, which had been closed for two years due to COVID-19, is welcoming visitors again this year after three years.

Chosun University announced on the 16th that it will reopen the Rose Garden in accordance with the phased recovery of daily life and provide a healing space for local residents for four days from the 19th to the 22nd.

The newly introduced "Rose Week," unlike the previous Rose Festival, is designed as a space where local residents can comfortably stroll through the Rose Garden, appreciate the artworks, and relax under the with-COVID-19 situation.

In particular, during this Rose Week, local residents, students, and small business owners will participate together, and as a token of gratitude to the local community, the parking lot will be open free of charge from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the weekend days of the 21st and 22nd.

The Chosun University Rose Garden spans 8,000㎡ and features approximately 18,000 rose bushes of 226 varieties, including Princess de Monaco, Jardin de France, Rusticana, and Inca.

Throughout the garden, large photo zones, shadow photo zones, a pergola where visitors can write and hang their wishes, exhibition spaces, and resting areas will be set up.

Forty-seven artworks by students from Chosun University’s College of Arts and Physical Education will be exhibited in the tennis court area next to the Rose Garden, and 45 works by the General Club Federation will be displayed in the pine forest located at the entrance of the Rose Garden, providing a rich visual experience.

From 3 p.m. on the first day, an orchestra composed of Chosun Technical College faculty and local residents will perform. On the same day and on the 20th at 6:30 p.m., Taekwondo demonstration performances by students from Chosun University’s Taekwondo Department will be held within the Rose Garden.

Additionally, Chosun University and the Chosun Rose Street Merchants Association will conduct purchase events and a flea market to revitalize the commercial district of the Rose Street at the back gate. For the purchase event, visitors who use the back gate stores and bring receipts totaling over 10,000 KRW to the event booth will receive prizes on a first-come, first-served basis.

The flea market is an event jointly participated in by the Chosun University Student Council and local residents, where student entrepreneurs and local entrepreneurs promote and sell products they have made themselves.

The Chosun University Rose Garden will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. during "Rose Week," and afterward, it will be freely accessible from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Lighting will be installed for nighttime viewing.

However, since health authorities maintain mask-wearing outdoors when it is difficult to keep a distance of more than 1 meter, Chosun University recommends wearing masks when visiting the Rose Garden, which attracts many visitors.

Meanwhile, the Chosun University Rose Garden began in May 2001, initiated by alumni of the College of Medicine who loved their alma mater and juniors.

Each rose flower symbolizes gratitude to the local residents who supported Chosun University’s growth into a prestigious private university in the Honam region, established in 1946 with the voluntary contributions and participation of over 72,000 founding members centered in the Honam area.
