[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-ho Kim] Samsung Display is taking over Samsung's free eye-opening project, which started in 1995, and is beginning full-scale activities.
Samsung Display recently announced on the 15th that it has decided the new project name as "Mujigae (Free Support Eye-Opening Project)" through an employee contest and signed a business agreement with Siloam Eye Hospital, the executing agency, to fully resume the free eye-opening project, which had been stalled due to COVID-19.
They explained that the project name "Mujigae (Free Support Eye-Opening Project)" was chosen to signify bringing bright light and hope to those suffering from eye diseases.
The free eye-opening project is one of Samsung's representative social contribution activities that began in 1995. So far, it has provided free ophthalmic examinations and surgeries to 230,000 vulnerable patients suffering from eye diseases and vision loss. After Samsung Display took over the project in 2020, activities were suspended due to the spread of COVID-19, but with the recent easing of social distancing, the project is being fully resumed.
Before fully restarting the project, Samsung Display plans to expand the Mujigae project’s scope and target to include marginalized children and adolescents who require specialized ophthalmic treatment, examinations, and surgeries, reflecting changes in the domestic medical environment such as expanded medical benefits for eye diseases.
In particular, they plan to launch an operating committee composed of five experts in healthcare and social welfare to ensure that more practical benefits reach those who truly need help.
Samsung Display also announced plans to operate the "Mujigae Helper" volunteer team so that those suffering from vision loss can comfortably receive hospital treatment and surgery. The "Mujigae Helper" volunteer team, consisting of about 150 employees, will provide vehicle support and mobility assistance to help project beneficiaries travel more conveniently from their residences to hospitals.
