Waiting for Ex's Package Delivery, Assault Occurs... Suspended Sentence Given

[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] A man in his 50s who assaulted a victim while trying to enter his ex-girlfriend's house intoxicated was sentenced to probation.

The Seoul Western District Court Criminal Division 7 (Presiding Judge Jeong Cheolmin) announced on the 14th that it sentenced Mr. A (59), who was tried on charges of injury, to 10 months in prison with a 2-year probation period and also ordered 1 year of probation supervision.

Judge Jeong pointed out, "The defendant has a history of 11 violent offenses, including being fined 4 million won for property damage, and has twice been sentenced to prison for crimes such as injuring his cohabiting partner in the past," adding, "The victim has suffered significant mental and physical pain from this crime."

However, Judge Jeong explained the sentencing reasoning, saying, "The defendant confessed and showed remorse, and reached an amicable settlement with the victim," and "The victim's injuries do not appear to be severe."

Mr. A is accused of hitting the back of Mr. B's head and facial areas such as his lips several times with his hand in front of Mr. B's residence in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, around 11:20 p.m. on September 26 last year, causing Mr. B's lips to tear and a bump to form on the back of his head, resulting in injury.

According to the court, on the same day, Mr. A, intoxicated, knocked on the front door of Mr. B's house, and when Mr. B did not open the door, he waited outside. When Mr. B briefly opened the door to place a delivery box inside, Mr. A assaulted him.

Meanwhile, Mr. A was also charged with violating the Act on the Punishment of Stalking Crimes, but the case was dismissed on the 14th of last month.
