Gwangju Seo-gu Holds 5·18 Democratization Movement Commemoration Event

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 10th that it will hold the 42nd anniversary commemorative event for the May 18 Democratic Movement this year.

Seo-gu will hold various meaningful events to commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives calling for democratization and to honor the spirit of sharing, sacrifice, and unity of May Gwangju.

On the 11th, senior officials at the department head level and above will pay tribute at the May 18 Democratic Cemetery.

Until the 24th, Seo-gu will host a special exhibition titled "May 1980, We Are Together Today" in the first-floor lobby of the government building, where visitors can see fine art works that sublimated the pain of the May 18 incident into art. About 30 paintings and sculptures by artists from the Seo-gu Art Association will be displayed.

On the 23rd and 24th, to mark the 13th anniversary of the late President Roh Moo-hyun’s passing, who dreamed of realizing true democracy, a space will be prepared at the same location for memorial services under the theme "The Thirteenth Spring, I Am the Awake River," where people can pay tribute and lay flowers.

A Seo-gu official said, "This event was planned to once again commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives fighting to protect democracy in this land and to promote the values of democracy, human rights, and peace that they sought to uphold."
