[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu is conducting the ‘2022 Street Culture Performances (Busking)’ to revitalize the atmosphere dampened by COVID-19 and to inject vitality and hope into artists and residents’ daily lives.
This street culture performance is promoted in collaboration with the Gwangjin Cultural Foundation, Konkuk University, and Sejong University, and is held every Friday and Saturday until the end of October, excluding the hot summer months of July and August.
Every Friday from 6 PM to 7 PM, performances take place at ▲Cheongchun Tteulak outdoor stage ▲Naru Art Center outdoor plaza or in front of Lotte Department Store (Konkuk Star City branch), and at the main gate of Children’s Grand Park from 12 PM to 1 PM, with eight performances held from May to October.
On the third Saturday of each month from 4 PM to 5 PM, various street performances including youth buskers, university clubs, musicals, Korean traditional music, and folk music are held at ▲Neungdong-ro Fountain Plaza.
Until the 28th of this month, diverse genre cultural sharing performances are held every Saturday from 4 PM to 5 PM at Achasan Eoullim Plaza, and in the second half of the year (August to October), the venue changes to Achasan Saturday Hanmadang.
Additionally, following the special spring performance on April 1st, a ‘Fall Special Performance Full of Emotion with MZ Generation’ is scheduled to be held on October 28th at the Cheongchun Tteulak outdoor stage. This performance will feature jazz or ballad music with autumnal emotions, offering moving experiences to residents.
Furthermore, every Saturday from 1 PM to 6 PM, an ‘Art Market’ is held at Neungdong-ro Fountain Plaza. The ‘Art Market’ exhibits and sells handcrafted works by artists and offers various cultural art experiences such as caricature and face painting.
The district plans to revitalize the youth cultural art street through these street culture performances, creating cultural landscapes in daily life and advancing as a cultural city.
Dongjak-gu (Mayor Lee Chang-woo) is operating the film screening program ‘Sayuksin Cinema’ and a ‘Regular Exhibition Interpretation Program’ at the Sayuksin History Museum (191 Noryangjin-ro) starting this month, in line with the recovery of daily life.
Following the lifting of mandatory social distancing measures for cultural facilities announced last month, the Sayuksin History Museum has started operating Sayuksin Cinema to actively run cultural facilities that had been stagnant due to COVID-19, thereby expanding cultural enjoyment opportunities for residents.
Sayuksin Cinema is divided into ▲Wednesday Theater (every Wednesday at 2 PM) and ▲Saturday Theater (second Saturday of each month at 2 PM), held in the museum’s video room.
At Wednesday Theater, recent history-related films such as “Malmoe” and “Collateral” are screened for residents near Noryangjin, while Saturday Theater screens family and animation films like “Soul” and “The Last Princess” for families visiting nearby.
Anyone visiting the museum can watch the cinema. However, young children must be accompanied by a guardian according to the film rating.
Additionally, a history film commentary program linked to Sayuksin Cinema, ‘Exploring History through Films,’ is also operated.
On the first Wednesday of each month’s Sayuksin Cinema Wednesday Theater, the historical background and events related to the screened films, which contain Korean history, are explained to help viewers appreciate the films.
Moreover, the district started a historical education program called ‘Regular Exhibition Interpretation’ this month, introducing Dongjak-gu’s cultural heritage and explaining the Sayuksin, who lost their lives in the restoration movement of King Danjong during the Joseon Dynasty.
This program is held every Friday and Saturday at 1 PM, where visitors and interpreters tour the Sayuksin History Museum exhibition rooms together. Anyone visiting the museum can participate by gathering at the first-floor district promotion hall at the start time.
For more details about this program, inquiries can be made through the Dongjak Cultural Foundation website, Sayuksin History Museum Instagram, or the Dongjak Cultural Foundation Cultural Project Team at 3258 (Exhibition Interpretation).
Park Tae-han, Director of the Sports and Culture Division, said, “Starting with Sayuksin Cinema and regular exhibition interpretation, we plan to develop various history and culture programs linked to local cultural heritage. Through this, the Sayuksin History Museum will fulfill its role as a historical and cultural facility of Dongjak-gu.”
The stages of singers full of emotion and romance color the spring evenings of Sinchon.
Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) announced that to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of ‘Sinchon, Paranggo-rae,’ it will hold the ‘2022 Emotional City, Sinchon Concert’ at Changcheon Cultural Park from 7 PM to 9 PM on the 11th, 18th, and 25th of this month.
On the 11th, the acoustic band ‘Hansalchai’ will greet the audience with sweet melodies, followed by ‘Seoul Brothers,’ who will deliver a performance filled with energy and passion through powerful arrangements, vocals, and guitar playing.
On the 18th, singer Song In-hyo, known from the Mnet Focus competition program, and the recently active ‘Band Sigol’ will perform folk music reminiscent of Sinchon in the 80s and 90s.
On the 25th, singer ‘Wonho,’ active mainly in Hongdae, and the band ‘Meotjin Insaeng,’ which continues the lineage of Korean indie rock group sounds, will close the concert.
The performances are open to all, and detailed information can be found on the ‘Sinchon, Paranggo-rae’ website or SNS channels.
Moon Seok-jin, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, said, “Through this indie music performance unfolding in the evening glow, I hope Changcheon Cultural Park and ‘Sinchon, Paranggo-rae’ located within it will receive even more love as a youth cultural community space.”
Songpa-gu is holding a youth artist curated exhibition titled ‘Collecting Green’ until July 3rd on the 2nd floor of the ‘Cultural Experiment Space Hosu’ located at Seokchon Lake.
This exhibition expresses various perspectives on nature surrounding us and the blue scenery of Seokchon Lake through the color ‘green,’ emphasizing the importance of nature.
The ‘Cultural Experiment Space Hosu,’ where the exhibition is held, offers a view of the beautiful lake through its windows and is a space harmonized with trees, flowers, and grass. The district remodeled a restaurant facility whose private consignment operation period expired at the end of 2019 and has been providing it as a cultural and artistic space for residents since July 2020.
The district encourages visitors to enjoy the seasonal natural scenery of Seokchon Lake through the windows and presents works depicting mountains, fields, seas, and other scenes not visible at Seokchon Lake, showcasing diverse perspectives on nature.
The participating artists are seven young artists: ▲Blatter ▲Kim Goru ▲Kim Ha-eun ▲Lee Ji-woo ▲Jung Min-hee ▲Jeon Ah-hyun ▲Lee Ye-won. Their works include paintings, digital drawings, crafts, and photographs capturing various aspects of nature.
In celebration of Family Month and Environment Month, exhibition-linked programs for children and adults are also conducted. The children’s education program ‘Green Drawing’ involves viewing the exhibition with an educator, discussing nature, landscapes, and the environment, and engaging in art learning activities. The adult education program ‘Green Gardener’ discusses the natural environment around Seokchon Lake and teaches landscaping.
A district official said, “Through the green landscapes conveyed by young artists at the ‘Cultural Experiment Space Hosu,’ we hope visitors will reflect on the preciousness of nature they may have forgotten and feel the mental calmness and relaxation that green brings.”
Dobong-gu (Mayor Lee Dong-jin) is recruiting participants for the ‘Unreal Engine 5 Metaverse Content Art Education’ course to train creators of metaverse content.
The metaverse industry has rapidly grown after COVID-19 but faces difficulties in securing sufficient workforce. In response, the district proposed a project connecting metaverse companies and young job seekers in the 2021 Seoul upward and cooperative job project and was selected.
This program uses Epic Games’ ‘Unreal Engine 5’ for education. ‘Unreal Engine’ is the world’s most widely used 3D content creation program, utilized in games, movies, animation, architectural design, landscaping, virtual reality, and various other content fields.
The education is conducted offline from June 27 to November 3, about five months, targeting 20 aspiring Unreal Engine 5 content designers (Monday to Friday, 12 PM to 6 PM). Applicants must be unemployed Seoul residents under 39 years old with a major in 3D design or related fields.
Applications are accepted from May 9 to June 7 via an online recruitment page. The district will announce the final participants on June 17 after one-on-one interviews.
Additionally, on May 24, a pre-online briefing session for recruitment will be held. Graduates of the course will receive support for job placement and portfolio redesign to aid job searching.
Lee Dong-jin, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “Through this program, metaverse content creators will freely produce content at ‘Seed Cube Changdong,’ establishing a metaverse creator economic ecosystem in Dobong-gu. We will spare no support to make Dobong-gu a hub for metaverse content in the northeastern Seoul metropolitan area.”
Meanwhile, Dobong-gu has been dedicated to creating a ‘creator economy’ through ‘3D workforce training’ within the metaverse ecosystem. On February 23, it signed an agreement with Unity Korea (Business Headquarters Director Kwon Jeong-ho) to create a metaverse-based creator ecosystem, planning to develop part of ‘Seed Cube Changdong (Startup and Cultural Industry Complex),’ scheduled for completion in May 2023, as a space for music and metaverse-based creators.
