[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Nayeon] Former Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party of Korea has officially announced his intention to run in the by-election held alongside the June 1 local elections.


Strategically nominated for the National Assembly by-election in Incheon Gyeyang-eul, he stated on the 7th, "I will fully abide by all party decisions," and added, "I trust the collective intelligence of the people and will fully immerse myself in the sea of public sentiment."


On the morning of the same day, Lee said this through Facebook and emphasized, "For a better future for the people, I will do my utmost together with the Democratic Party candidates who are running in this challenging election and will definitely win."


He also said, "The Democratic Party's situation and the difficulties of the local elections are also my responsibility due to the presidential election defeat, and I deeply feel that overcoming this is entirely my responsibility," adding, "I will take unlimited responsibility."


Furthermore, he added, "I will fully immerse myself in the sea of public sentiment. I will fully abide by all party decisions," and "For a better future for the people, I will do my utmost together with the Democratic Party candidates who are running in this challenging election and will definitely win."


He said, "The people are the nation. Politics is responsible for the better lives of the people," and stated, "For politicians who are workers for the people and tools of the people, personal gains and losses are merely secondary issues," while adding, "I deeply reflect on the fact that politics is unlimited responsibility for the people. I will fulfill my responsibility through actions, not words, and through practice, not empty promises."


Earlier, the Democratic Party decided to strategically nominate former party leader Song Young-gil's constituency, Incheon Gyeyang-eul, with former Governor Lee Jae-myung.
