[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Police Agency (Chief Go Gi-cheol) is promoting a ‘black box-type CCTV installation project’ in the mid-mountainous and other eup/myeon areas to improve the regional safety index (crime sector), which remains in the lower ranks nationwide.
According to Jeju Police Agency on the 4th, this project was promoted to build a security infrastructure through environmental improvement, as the resident and floating population has been steadily increasing recently, while the number of CCTV installations is relatively insufficient compared to the eastern region.
The black box-type CCTV installation project began in 2020 with the installation of 26 locations in Namwon-eup, Seogwipo City (Harye-ri, Wimi-ri), and in 2021, 100 locations were installed in areas such as Seonheul-ri, Jocheon-eup, Bongseong-ri, Aewol-eup, and Gasi-ri, Pyoseon-myeon.
Analysis of the crime reduction rate before and after the project confirmed the crime prevention effect, such as a decrease of about 22.1% in the theft occurrence rate in the Namwon-eup area compared to the same period last year.
Accordingly, this year, 200 million KRW of local government budget was secured through the Autonomous Police Committee to expand the project.
Jeju Police selected a total of 97 locations reflecting the analysis of crime occurrence in the mid-mountainous area using the ‘Geographical Profiling System (Geo-Pros)’ and the opinions of local residents through the ‘Community Policing Council,’ aiming to complete installation by next month.
At the same time, utilizing the newly established police mobile unit this year, the ‘Mid-mountainous 24-hour Safety Police’ patrols 24 hours a day in five villages in the eastern region (Daeheul, Wasan, Seonheul, Deokcheon, Songdang) and five villages in the western region (Bongseong, Sangdae, Geumak, Wollim, Jeoji).
The ‘Our Neighborhood Security Keeper (village police officer)’ program is also implemented in each mid-mountainous village, closely listening to the voices of local residents and conducting complex security activities linked to protecting vulnerable groups within the security domain.
A Jeju Police official said, “We will continue to do our best to expand security infrastructure in the mid-mountainous areas, which were considered security blind spots, by actively collecting scientific data analysis and residents’ opinions, and to equalize security services throughout the province.”
