160 Cases of Domestic Health Functional Foods and 377 Cases of Imported Health Functional Foods Under Customs Inspection
3 Imported Products Fail Disintegration Test... Recall and Disposal Measures Taken
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] On the 3rd, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced that it had identified one violation of the "Health Functional Foods Act" after conducting a focused inspection of 101 health functional food manufacturers nationwide.
This inspection was carried out from the 11th to the 22nd of last month as a preemptive safety management measure for health functional foods, which are actively consumed as gifts during the Family Month in May. The inspection targets were mainly selected from companies that had received administrative sanctions since 2019, those that were not inspected or guided last year, and those with a history of non-compliance in product recalls and tests.
As a result of the inspection, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety reported that one company violated the Good Manufacturing Practice for Health Functional Foods by failing to comply with the instructions in the record of directives, and imposed sanctions such as business suspension. The ministry will conduct a re-inspection within six months to verify whether the company has corrected the violations.
Along with the manufacturer inspections, detailed tests were also conducted on 160 health functional food products distributed domestically and 377 products at the customs clearance stage.
Among the products collected and tested were 60 items commonly distributed as gifts, such as Red Ginseng and probiotics, and 100 imported health functional food products. As a result, three products?one imported synbiotic product and two lutein products?were found to be non-compliant in the disintegration test. The disintegration test measures the degree to which solids like capsules dissolve in the stomach or intestines. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety plans to recall and dispose of these three products.
All 377 health functional food products at the import customs clearance stage were confirmed to meet the standards and specifications based on the detailed test results.
