Professor Kim Yuseok of Chosun University Hospital Performs Region's First 'Oral Robotic Thyroidectomy'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Professor Kim Yuseok of the Department of Breast and Thyroid Surgery at Chosun University Hospital recently performed the first transoral robotic thyroidectomy in Gwangju and Jeonnam.

The transoral robotic approach is a minimally invasive surgical method compared to other existing endoscopic and robotic surgery techniques.

The surgical robot instruments enter through the mouth, allowing precise resection of only the thyroid without damaging other tissues and organs, resulting in no scars on the neck after surgery, faster recovery, and less pain.

The ‘Transoral Robotic Thyroidectomy (TORT)’ performed by Professor Kim is a state-of-the-art surgical technique that combines the latest robotic system with intraoperative nerve monitoring technology to minimize nerve damage around the area.

It is known as the most minimally invasive thyroid surgery currently available and is considered the best-suited surgical method for patients hoping to avoid scars and side effects.

Chosun University Hospital plans to continue providing cutting-edge medical care for the residents of the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions.

Meanwhile, Professor Kim began his career as a clinical instructor in the Department of Breast and Endocrine Surgery at Seoul Asan Medical Center, completed endocrine surgery training at the Cleveland Clinic in the United States, and has been actively involved as an examination director of the Korean Society of Endocrine Surgery, a member of clinical practice guideline and editorial committees, secretary and international committee member of the Korean Breast Cancer Society, and research and editorial committee member of the Korean Society of Surgical Ultrasound.
