[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] Daegu City has taken action to resolve the foul odor along the Sincheon riverside.
Daegu City will install five additional odor reduction devices along the Sincheon, which runs through the city center. Although Sincheon has been popular as a waterfront space, many complaints have arisen due to the foul smell.
The sewage odor is mainly known to originate from the open stormwater chambers near the river. Daegu City plans to complete a state-of-the-art ICT-based smart sewage odor management project by 2024, with a total budget of 22.8 billion KRW.
Among the entire section, five locations with the worst odor, including under Jungdonggyo Bridge and Daebonggyo Bridge, were selected. From July to October 2021, odor-blocking sluice gates and odor reduction devices, part of a pilot project by the Ministry of Environment, were installed.
This year, five open stormwater chambers in the Sincheon section where sewage odor occurs were selected, and odor-blocking sluice gates were installed by April. The newly installed sections will also be regularly monitored.
Mayor Kwon Young-jin of Daegu said, “We will fundamentally eliminate sewage odor by increasing the classification rate of sewage and stormwater drainage systems from the current 43.9% to 80% by 2030, creating a city free from sewage odor and comfortable to live in.”
