Carbon Emission Reduction Consumer Participation Campaign
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Jeju Air is launching a campaign to encourage domestic passengers to participate in reducing carbon emissions as part of its efforts to lower carbon output.
On the 2nd, Jeju Air announced that to encourage customers' voluntary participation in carbon emission reduction activities, it will issue Green Travel Passes to customers who reduce their luggage weight, offering priority boarding benefits.
Starting from the 3rd, the Green Travel Pass service will be available to domestic passengers. Passengers carrying less than 5kg of carry-on luggage without checked baggage can receive a Green Travel Pass at the certification counter and present the pass when boarding the aircraft to receive priority boarding benefits.
By carrying only carry-on luggage under 5kg without checked baggage, passengers can reduce waiting time before boarding through priority boarding benefits. It also saves time waiting to collect checked baggage after arrival.
For example, if all passengers on Jeju Air’s Gimpo-Jeju route reduce their luggage by 1kg each, with 189 passengers reducing a total of 189kg, approximately 6.8kg of fuel can be saved per flight, reducing carbon emissions by 21.5kgCO2.
Jeju Air has been continuously working to reduce carbon emissions by replacing aircraft brakes from traditional steel brakes to lighter carbon brakes to reduce aircraft weight, improving flight efficiency through engine cleaning, and other measures.
Last year, the replacement of aircraft brakes and engine cleaning reduced fuel consumption by about 771 tons annually, with a carbon reduction amounting to approximately 2435tCO2. The B737-8, scheduled for phased introduction starting next year, is expected to help significantly reduce carbon emissions by about 13% compared to existing aircraft.
Additionally, Jeju Air pilots have been voluntarily conducting the ‘Save the Polar Bears Project’ campaign since 2017, aiming to reduce carbon emissions through improved fuel efficiency. Since 2019, the airline has actively engaged in various activities such as using eco-friendly materials for in-flight straws, paper cups, and plastic, and since November last year, the cabin crew volunteer group Eco-Mer has been conducting environmental cleanup activities along Jeju’s coast.
A Jeju Air official stated, “Starting with voluntary participation by employees to reduce carbon emissions, we are making structural improvements such as reducing aircraft weight and improving flight efficiency. Through the Green Travel Pass service, we are also encouraging consumer participation and continuously striving to practice ESG management.”
