Seoul City Conducts Joint On-Site Inspection of High Traffic Fatality Areas... Expands Customized Traffic Safety Facilities

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Autonomous Police Committee announced on the 2nd that it will inspect traffic accident-prone areas and promote improvements to traffic facilities in collaboration with the Urban Transportation Office, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, Korea Transportation Safety Authority, Road Traffic Authority, and autonomous districts.

In response to the recent increase in traffic accident fatalities due to increased citizen activity, the committee has expanded and reorganized the existing 'Traffic Accident Reduction Task Force' to discuss effective accident prevention measures. As part of this effort, it plans to prepare practical measures through joint field inspections and support their prompt implementation.

Starting with Gangseo-gu on the 25th of last month, field inspections are being sequentially conducted in autonomous districts with high traffic fatality rates within Seoul (Gangseo, Yeongdeungpo, Songpa, Guro, Dongdaemun), conducting traffic safety diagnoses and accident case analyses. Based on the field analysis results, experts from related organizations will develop customized traffic facility improvement plans. According to data from the Police Agency, Gangseo-gu recorded 72 traffic accident fatalities over the past five years (2017?2021), with pedestrian deaths reaching 40, highlighting the urgent need for pedestrian safety measures.

The recent Gangseo-gu field inspection was conducted near the Gangseo Public Health Center (15 cases) and the Western Blood Center (34 cases), areas with frequent traffic accidents over three years (2018?2020). Subsequently, specialized traffic facility improvement plans were derived based on major accident types, fault status, and responsible parties in Gangseo-gu, including the inspected sites.

At the 'Traffic Accident Reduction Task Force' meeting, related organizations including △Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency △Seoul Urban Transportation Office △Gangseo District Office △Korea Safety Authority △Seoul Metropolitan Autonomous Police Committee pledged to establish traffic accident prevention measures through cooperation and to implement them promptly.

Kim Hak-bae, Chairperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Autonomous Police Committee, stated, “The derived measures will be promptly implemented through close cooperation with autonomous districts, the police, and related organizations,” adding, “We will do our utmost to ensure citizen safety by preventing similar traffic accidents through joint inspections and facility improvements.”
