Spring Academic Conference on the Topic of 'Development Status of Steel Materials for Hydrogen Use'
POSCO held a steel technology symposium on the 27th with the theme "Development of Steel Materials for Hydrogen Society Response."
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] POSCO held the 95th Steel Technology Symposium at the Changwon Convention Center (CECO) on the 27th.
The steel technology symposium held that day was part of the spring academic conference program of the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials, under the theme "Current Status of Development of Steel Materials for Hydrogen Use in Response to the Hydrogen Society."
The event was attended by 120 participants on-site and was also conducted online.
It was organized to share strategies for a hydrogen society and the development status of steel materials for the hydrogen industry to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
The symposium was divided into three sessions: "Steel Industry Response to the Transition to a Hydrogen Society," "Development of Steel Materials for Gaseous Hydrogen Transportation and Storage," and "Development of Steel Materials for Liquefied Hydrogen Transportation and Storage."
The first session was chaired by POSCO Research Fellow Jeong Hwan-gyo, with lectures by Senior Researcher Roh Gil-tae of Korean Register, PD Jeong Ki-seok of Korea Energy Technology Evaluation Institute, and Vice President Park Jin-ho of Korea University of Energy and Technology, covering the importance of the hydrogen energy industry and domestic and international hydrogen industry policy trends.
The second session was chaired by Na Hee-seung, Head of the Jeonju Product Safety Support Center at Korea Gas Technology Corporation. Presenters included Manager Kim Min-seok of NK Ether, Professor Hwang Byung-chul of Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Professor Ha Sung-kyu of Hanyang University, and Team Leader Kim Kyu-tae of Hyundai Steel, who shared trends in domestic high-pressure hydrogen storage vessels, eco-friendly pressure vessels, and hydrogen pipeline material development.
The final session was chaired by Professor Lee Jae-myung of Pusan National University. Presenters included Team Leader Lim Min-kyu of Hyosung, Professor Kim Jeong-hyun of Pusan National University, Professor Kim Sung-jun of POSTECH, and Senior Researcher Kim Kwang-min of POSCO Steel Research Institute, who presented on the characteristics and material development plans of metallic materials for liquefied hydrogen storage vessels.
Joo Se-don, Head of POSCO Technical Research Institute, stated, "In line with the global decarbonization trend, the steel industry must prepare for a new transition period through a major structural transformation, with hydrogen at its core."
POSCO, led by the Technical Research Institute, is accelerating the development of steel materials for hydrogen use and plans to make thorough preparations to secure competitiveness in the upcoming hydrogen society.
