Over 50 Constituents Suspected of Receiving Gift Sets Worth Around 30,000 Won

Democratic Naju City Council Candidate Suspected of 'Illegal Donation Activities'... Election Commission Investigation

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] A candidate A Gyeongseon running for the Democratic Party of Korea's Naju City Council in Jeonnam has been reported for providing gifts to constituents, prompting the Naju City Election Commission to launch an investigation.

According to the informant on the 28th, a report was filed with the Naju City Election Commission the previous day alleging that Mr. A engaged in donation activities toward constituents.

Mr. A is suspected of providing gift sets (daily necessities) worth about 30,000 won to approximately 50 constituents on the 7th.

It is known that Mr. A, as a public enterprise labor union chairman, claims that the gifts were given as a customary practice unrelated to the election.

A representative of the Naju City Election Commission stated, "A report has been received, and we are currently verifying the facts. Whether there is a violation of the Public Official Election Act can only be confirmed after an investigation."

Meanwhile, under election law, candidates for local council members are prohibited from making donations to constituents or those with ties to them, and if an elected official is convicted of violating this law with a fine of 1 million won or more, their election is invalidated.
