Airbags to Mitigate Impact from Fall Accidents... Busan Port Authority Introduces Smart Safety Vests at Construction Sites

Airbags to Mitigate Impact from Fall Accidents... Busan Port Authority Introduces Smart Safety Vests at Construction Sites A construction site worker is working on the exterior wall from a ladder.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Busan Port Authority has introduced smart safety vests that inflate like airbags to protect workers in order to prevent serious accidents caused by falls at construction sites.

BPA provided smart safety vests at the construction site of Busan New Port West Container Terminal (phases 2 to 5) for workers operating on work platforms to wear.

The smart safety vest is worn over work clothes like a regular safety vest but is equipped with an accelerometer sensor and an airbag.

When abnormal signs such as sudden tilting of the wearer’s body are detected, the built-in airbag instantly inflates, wrapping around the worker’s neck and upper body to cushion the impact.

BPA directly purchased the smart safety vests and lends them free of charge to sites with high risk of falls, such as framework and exterior finishing works, encouraging active use.

A BPA official said, “We proactively purchased the smart safety vests, which were registered as an innovative product by the Public Procurement Service last year. We currently have 20 units and plan to expand their use if the operational results are good.”

In addition to introducing smart safety vests, BPA plans to create safer construction sites by preventing serious accidents through differentiated ESG management, such as installing inclination displacement meters on work platforms.
