[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] Gyeongju City, Gyeongbuk Province, will implement a project to provide free basic taxi fares for seniors aged 70 and over starting in late May.
This project issues senior taxi cards that support the basic taxi fare of 3,300 KRW, providing up to 40 rides per year per person (132,000 KRW) in support.
However, any amount exceeding the basic fare must be paid separately.
The eligible applicants are seniors aged 70 and over as of the card application date, and applications will be accepted at the local administrative welfare centers starting in late May. Specific schedules will be announced later.
The senior taxi card cannot be transferred to a third party, and if transferred, the support funds will be reclaimed and the card will become unusable.
Also, in case of loss or other reasons requiring reissuance, the user must bear the card production fee of 3,000 KRW.
A Gyeongju City official said, "We hope this project will be a small help to seniors," and added, "We also expect it to revitalize the stagnant taxi industry."
