Choi Chi-hyun, Gwangsan District Mayor Preliminary Candidate, Declares Vision for a 'Harmonious Community City'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Choi Chi-hyun, a former Blue House administrative officer under President Moon Jae-in and a preliminary candidate for mayor of Gwangsan District, Gwangju, representing the Democratic Party of Korea, announced on the 27th the declaration of the vision for the 8th term of the Gwangsan District, "A Harmonious Community City," along with the core tasks to support it and the "New Deal 7."

Candidate Choi stated, "I will cultivate the 8th term of Gwangsan District into 'A Harmonious Community City,' turning an era of crisis into an opportunity and creating a model in the region that leads the energy transition and digital transformation."

As a solution to the climate crisis, Choi proposed "a good relationship between people and the environment," and as a solution to the expected mass layoffs and deepening polarization due to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, "a good relationship between people." He said he would establish "good relationships" through citizen autonomy and governance, laying the foundation for 100 years of prosperity in Gwangsan.

As core tasks for "A Harmonious Community City," Candidate Choi said he would promote the formation of the "Gwangsan Future 100-Year Committee," a public-private-academic governance body. Furthermore, he emphasized the establishment of a dedicated department directly under the mayor's office to support and promote governance.

This approach aims to provide governance-based solutions to major pending issues that will determine the future of Gwangsan District and the region, such as the relocation of Gwangju Airport, the development of Gwangju Songjeong Station and its surrounding area, and the settlement of future local industries.

He raised his voice, saying, "While outstanding individuals such as the mayor and members of the National Assembly may propose solutions, for such critical matters, experts and the local community must deliberate to prepare a blueprint."

He added, "By consolidating regional capabilities through governance and presenting a vision through democratic procedures, not only can social costs and conflicts be reduced during the project implementation process, but the project can also proceed with broad citizen participation."

To support "A Harmonious Community City," he also presented the seven major pledges called "New Deal 7 to Make Young Gwangsan More Innovative and Pleasant." Specifically, these include ▲ citizen autonomy that turns crises into opportunities ▲ health and happiness closer to the river ▲ carbon neutrality starting from the public sector ▲ steadily increasing living culture and respect infrastructure ▲ guaranteeing the right to live with dignity ▲ supporting recovery from COVID-19 daily life ▲ leveraging the advantages of a rural-urban complex and multicultural city as local resources.

Candidate Choi said, "I will use the skills recognized by Gwangsan District, the Blue House, and the central government, as well as my ability to foster good relationships between people, for the better life of Gwangsan residents." He added, "I will do my best for Gwangsan District to be a city where neighbors live harmoniously and decide the city's future together, where citizens protect and enjoy beautiful rivers and mountains, and where new technologies are wisely adjusted to serve people."
