Muan-gun, Promoting Animal Welfare-Oriented Green Livestock Farms
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Oh Hwan-joo] Muan County in Jeollanam-do is making every effort to expand the designation of animal welfare-type green livestock farms to ensure the safe production and supply of livestock products and secure consumer trust.
The designation of animal welfare-type green livestock farms is a project aimed at minimizing the occurrence of livestock infectious diseases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) and foot-and-mouth disease caused by factory-style intensive farming, and creating a breeding environment suitable for livestock ecology.
After document screening, the county plans to designate farms that score more than 80% of the total points in on-site evaluations of 22 items, including livestock breeding density, securing livestock exercise yards, and cleanliness of barns, as green livestock farms.
Green livestock farms receive operating funds of 2 million KRW per farm as incentives for maintenance and management, and farms are given priority when applying for various livestock policy projects.
Applicants must be livestock farms that have received at least one of the following: eco-friendly livestock product certification, HACCP certification, designation as a clean livestock farm, or government-certified animal welfare-type livestock farm certification. For more details, contact the Livestock Division of the Agricultural Technology Center.
Currently, in Muan County, a total of 23 farms are designated and operated as green livestock farms, including 11 Hanwoo farms, 1 dairy cattle farm, 6 pig farms, and 5 broiler farms. The county aims to designate 7 additional green livestock farms this year.
Joo Byung-ryul, head of the Livestock Division, said, “We plan to continuously expand the designation of animal welfare-type green livestock farms by improving livestock breeding environments and hygienic management to encourage environmentally friendly livestock practices and produce safe livestock products. We ask for the interest and applications of livestock farmers.”
