Jeju Police Agency Conducts Special Crackdown on Drunk Driving... 41 Caught

[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Police Agency (Chief Go Gi-cheol) announced on the 25th that it caught 41 people during a one-week drunk driving crackdown conducted from the 18th to the 24th.

This drunk driving crackdown was promoted to prevent drunk driving in advance as outdoor activities and various gatherings increased with the recent lifting of social distancing and the start of the peak leisure season.

In particular, during the daytime on the first weekend, the 23rd and 24th, a special drunk driving crackdown was carried out around restaurant districts and leisure spots, resulting in a total of 8 people being caught (6 license suspensions, 2 license cancellations).

Around 2 p.m. on the 23rd near the ○○ Intersection in Jocheon-eup, Jeju City, a male driver in his 60s who had finished harvesting bracken with his group and drank one can of beer at a convenience store was caught with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.040%, the license suspension level.

At around 1:20 p.m. the previous day at the ○○ Intersection in Aewol-eup, Jeju City, a male driver in his 50s who drank two glasses of Makgeolli at a restaurant during lunch after working in the field was caught with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.032%, the license suspension level.

At around 3 p.m. on the 23rd in ○○-dong, Seogwipo City, a male driver in his 50s who drank daytime alcohol with a friend was caught with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.126%, the license cancellation level.

The Jeju Police Agency expressed concern that the sense of caution regarding drunk driving might loosen in the excited atmosphere following the lifting of social distancing and plans to closely cooperate with the Autonomous Police Corps to conduct a special drunk driving crackdown for two months from June 1 to June 30.

This crackdown will be conducted as a ‘spot mobile’ operation, frequently changing the time and place of enforcement focusing on high-risk drunk driving areas by region, including downtown entertainment districts, major roadsides, and restaurant districts located in suburban areas.

A Jeju Police official said, “Drunk driving is a ‘serious criminal act’ that can instantly take away not only one’s own but also others’ precious lives, property, and happiness,” and added, “Please remember that enforcement can happen anytime and anywhere, and never get behind the wheel even after one drink.”
