[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-ho Kim] The detention period for Lee Eun-hae (31) and Jo Hyun-soo (30), suspects in the 'Valley Murder' case, has been extended until the 5th of next month.
According to the legal community on the 23rd, the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office recently extended the detention period for Lee and Jo, who are charged with murder, attempted murder, and attempted violation of the Special Act on the Prevention of Insurance Fraud.
Kim Sang-woo, the duty judge of the Incheon District Court, accepted the prosecution's extension request the day before, extending their detention period until the 5th of next month. According to the Criminal Procedure Act, the detention period for a suspect during the prosecution investigation stage is 10 days, and with court approval, it can be extended once for up to an additional 10 days.
Lee is accused of killing A (39 years old at the time of death) at around 8:24 p.m. on June 30, 2019, at Yongsogye Valley in Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi Province, together with her lover Jo. The prosecution believes that they forced A, who could not swim at all, to jump from a 4-meter-high rock into a valley pool 3 meters deep and then did not rescue him, resulting in his death.
The prosecution applied the charge of so-called 'murder by omission,' believing that Lee and Jo deliberately did not rescue A, aiming to claim the 800 million won life insurance money taken out in A's name.
Meanwhile, B (30), a friend of Jo who played in the water at the valley with the victim before the victim's death, is also charged with murder and other offenses. With 18 prior convictions, he was arrested for drug sales and sentenced to one year in prison by the Andong branch of the Daegu District Court in May last year. After his release, he was reportedly investigated by the prosecution in connection with the valley murder case.
