[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, urged the UK government to "show mercy to the Ukrainian people" regarding Ukraine.

On the 21st (local time), Zakharova wrote on her Telegram, "From our standpoint, we call on the UK authorities to show mercy to the Ukrainian people and to stop supplying weapons to the Kyiv regime."

This was a direct response to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's earlier plea for mercy for the British nationals captured as prisoners in Mariupol.

She sarcastically remarked, "The more weapons the UK sends to Ukraine, the more Ukrainians die. But the BBC will not tell this to the British people."

Zakharova claimed that Russia is treating British and other foreign prisoners with leniency, stating, "The British have no reason to worry about the fate of their compatriots. They are well fed and receiving all necessary support. The same applies to all other foreign nationals who have surrendered or been detained."

She also criticized Prime Minister Johnson and his cabinet for being completely indifferent to the fate of British citizens.

Addressing Johnson, she wrote, "We know very well that you and your government do not care about British citizens at all. Stop pretending to be concerned."

Earlier, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said regarding the British nationals captured by Russian forces on the Ukrainian battlefield, "I will ask Russia and President Vladimir Putin to treat all prisoners of war properly according to the laws and conventions of war."
