[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] An elderly mother and her son were found dead in an old house in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
According to the police on the 21st, the Hyehwa Police Station in Seoul received a report around 10:50 a.m. the previous day that an elderly mother in her 80s and her son in his 50s were found dead in Changsin-dong, Jongno-gu, and dispatched officers to the scene.
The deceased mother and son were first discovered by a waterworks office employee who visited the house suspecting a leak after noticing an unusually high water bill.
It was reported that they had been in financial difficulties to the extent that they could not pay their electricity bills for several months, but since they owned the house, they were not selected as basic livelihood security recipients.
A police official stated, “The autopsy has been completed,” adding, “It appears that the son, who had a chronic illness, died first, followed by the mother who had mobility difficulties.”
