[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the 21st, President Moon Jae-in presented the appointment letter to Lee Chang-yong, the new Governor of the Bank of Korea, and urged him to stabilize prices, manage household debt, and stabilize the real estate market.
President Moon said during a conversation after the morning ceremony, "The most important and tangible issue for the people at this point is price stability."
President Moon said, "While focusing on price stability, achieving growth simultaneously is a difficult task, but please make sure to manage it," and added, "Please manage household debt, which is a potential threat factor, well, and harmonize it while stabilizing the real estate market."
He continued, "Governor Lee has held senior positions in international economic organizations such as the ADB (Asian Development Bank) and IMF (International Monetary Fund), providing insightful analysis and evaluation of the Asian and Korean economies, and advising on Korean monetary policy. I have been grateful and felt reassured," and praised, "During the confirmation hearing, no one raised objections to the governor's credibility and ability, and there was consensus that the most suitable person was appointed."
Governor Lee expressed gratitude and said, "I will prioritize efforts to harmonize prices and growth, and resolve household debt and real estate issues," adding, "Overseas, Korea is considered a model case. Our people have resilience and excellence, so if we unite, we can overcome difficulties."
He continued, "The mission of the Bank of Korea is to ensure that the macroeconomic framework does not shake rather than achieving short-term results," and said, "I will lead the organization well and offer candid advice for the stability of the macroeconomic framework. I will be an active advisor, not a quiet one."
