Yoon Bong-geun, Gwangsan District Mayor Candidate, "Military Airport Relocation... Rising as a Medical Hub City"

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Yoon Bong-geun, the Democratic Party preliminary candidate for mayor of Gwangsan District, Gwangju Metropolitan City, proposed on the 21st the prompt relocation of the local military airport and the construction of an AI Smart Medical Eco City on the relocated site.

The issue of relocating the military airport has emerged as the most urgent local issue related to the June 1 local elections in Gwangju.

Preliminary candidate Yoon said, “Noise damage, infringement of property rights, and restrictions on regional development for Gwangsan residents have continued for decades,” adding, “We will promptly resolve the military airport relocation issue, which is the greatest wish of Gwangju citizens, and build an advanced AI Smart Medical Eco City to make Gwangsan the medical hub of the southwestern region.”

Candidate Yoon referred to the case of Texas Medical City (TMC) in southern Texas, USA.

He added, “We will promote the transformation into an eco-friendly future city with advanced medical facilities using AI, universities and research institutes, parks, theaters, and ecological parks on a 2.48 million-pyeong site.”

Candidate Yoon emphasized that “absolute cooperation from Gwangju City and the government is necessary for this,” stressing that he is the right person for the job, having experience in administration and coordination on the central political stage.

Meanwhile, he has experience leading local public opinion for the enactment of the ‘Special Act on the Relocation and Support of Military Airfields’ during his tenure as chairman of the city council in 2012.

Candidate Yoon, a native of Gwangsan, has worked as a teacher, district council member, chairman of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Education Committee, chairman of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Council, and chairman of the National Council of Chairpersons of City and Provincial Councils. He also served as a public communication committee member of the Presidential Committee on Balanced National Development under President Moon Jae-in. Currently, he is actively working as an administrative coordination committee member at the Prime Minister’s Office, moving between central and local governments, and is recognized for his high name recognition and solid support base as a former standing election committee chairman for Representative Lee Yong-bin.
