Gyeongnam Province Supports 350 Million Won from Provincial Funds to Foster 'Future Innovation Talent' Gyeongnam Provincial Government Office.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Gyeongsangnam-do will support the 4th phase of the Brain Korea (BK)21 project with 350 million KRW this year.

The 4th phase of the Brain Korea (BK)21 project is an educational reform policy by the Ministry of Education that supports the next generation of scholars to focus on their studies and research, providing graduate student research scholarships and salaries for early-career researchers.

In Gyeongnam, 14 research teams from Gyeongsang National University, Changwon National University, and Inje University are participating in the project. These universities were finally selected in 2020 and will conduct research activities until 2027.

A national fund of 47 billion KRW is provided, and Gyeongsangnam-do will support 2.2 billion KRW until 2027 to assist the activities of the research teams.

This year, the project promotes the Future Talent Development Project to enhance research capabilities in core academic fields such as science, technology, humanities, and social sciences, and the Innovative Talent Development Project to cultivate talent in leading new industries for innovative growth.

The Future Talent Development Project is primarily carried out by the Glocal Talent Education and Research Team in Agricultural Life Biotechnology at Gyeongsang National University.

This research team operates with the aim of enhancing research competitiveness and talent development in the regional agricultural life industry, aiming to improve the qualitative excellence of graduate students' theses through international education and achieve results in the top 25% of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) impact factor.

The Innovative Talent Development Project is conducted by the Regional Innovation Growth Leading Smart Industrial Complex Talent Education and Research Team at Changwon National University.

It aims to cultivate innovative talents who will lead the smart industrial complex and realize regional industrial development through industry-academia cooperation, with plans to activate research and development in the manufacturing artificial intelligence field this year.

An official from the province stated that as a result of the second-year project in 2021, the participating universities in the province produced a total of 280 master's and doctoral personnel, fostering professional researchers.

Through collaboration between participating graduate students and professors, 193 domestic and international patents were filed and registered, including those related to growth promotion of beneficial strains using prebiotics, compositions for plant disease control, and their applications.

In fields such as mechanical engineering and fashion, approximately 770 SCI(E)-level papers were published in scientific journals highly valued in the science and technology field, enhancing the research capabilities of graduate students in the province.

Oh Jong-su, Director of the Integrated Education Promotion Team, said, “Gyeongsangnam-do will actively support the Brain Korea 21 project to produce many core talents who will lead the region,” and added, “We will diligently assist in discovering support projects for university and graduate students to raise the capabilities of students in the province.”
