[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met with a delegation of U.S. lawmakers at the Prime Minister's Official Residence in Tokyo on the 16th, confirming close cooperation between the two countries to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.

Prime Minister Kishida had breakfast with the delegation of six members of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, including Robert Menendez, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who visited Japan following Taiwan.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Kishida said, "It is important for the U.S. and Japan to cooperate more closely to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific."

The "free and open Indo-Pacific" is a concept promoted by the U.S. and Japan to counter China's maritime expansion.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reported that Prime Minister Kishida and the lawmakers exchanged views on the international community's response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as well as the situation surrounding China and North Korea.
