Yeonggwang-gun Launches 2-Day 1-Night Experience Program at Maegandang Gotaek

[Yeonggwang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jeonseong] Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do, together with the Jeollanam-do Jonggahoe Yeonggwang Branch, will start the program "The Secret of Filial Piety Unveiled through the I Ching" at the Yeonggwang Maegandang Gotaek site, National Folklore Cultural Property No. 234, from the 16th until October.

According to the county on the 14th, this project, promoted as part of the Cultural Heritage Administration's contest "Utilization Project of Old Ancestral Houses," will be held a total of 10 times until October, operating as a 1-night, 2-day program.

The program includes various activities such as uncovering the secret of filial piety at Maegandang Gotaek through the I Ching, a lecture on the humanities of bojagi (traditional wrapping cloth), experiencing a day living in the old-fashioned way, Nongak (traditional Korean farmer's music) experience, performances, and exhibitions.

Located in Dongpyeon Village, Donggan-ri, Gunnam-myeon, Maegandang Gotaek is a typical upper-class house from the late Joseon Dynasty, situated on a renowned site called Maehwa Nakji (梅花落地), believed to be a geomantic spot where beautiful descendants are born.

As a private residence, it boasts the largest scale in South Korea with 12 buildings and 125 rooms. The Samhyo Gate, adorned with dragon patterns, stands tall as the main gate, and three thatched-roof hoji houses remain outside the main house.

Additionally, the ancestral shrine and the seodang (private Confucian school) where children were taught are preserved intact.

A county official stated, "Through this program, participants will have the opportunity to experience various activities in a frozen moment of time and discover the cultural heritage value of Maegandang's magnificent Samhyo Gate, earthen walls, stone walls, flower walls, and munchangsal (traditional wooden lattice windows)."
