[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Fire Safety Headquarters (Chief Park Geun-oh) announced on the 14th that from 2 PM to 4 PM on the 28th, a simultaneous crackdown on illegal parking and stopping around fire hydrants will be conducted throughout Jeju Island.
According to Article 32 of the Road Traffic Act (Prohibition of Stopping and Parking), vehicles are not allowed to stop or park within 5 meters of fire hydrants and other firefighting water facilities.
Since August 2019, under the revised Road Traffic Act, fines for illegal parking around fire hydrants with safety signs have been increased from 40,000 KRW to 80,000 KRW for passenger cars, and from 50,000 KRW to 90,000 KRW for vans.
This simultaneous crackdown is conducted annually to raise awareness that illegal parking and stopping around fire hydrants and other firefighting water facilities can cause significant damage by obstructing smooth water supply during fires or other disasters, and to reduce such illegal parking through strengthened enforcement.
The crackdown targets vehicles parked or stopped within 5 meters of fire hydrants marked with safety signs (red color markings or red double lines). Enforcement teams will be organized by each fire station to conduct simultaneous crackdowns across all areas of Jeju during the same time period.
Prior to the crackdown, the Fire Safety Headquarters plans to actively promote voluntary participation by residents through posting promotional materials and distributing notices on the website, SNS, banners, and electronic display boards until the 27th.
Park Geun-oh, Chief of the Fire Safety Headquarters, said, “Securing firefighting water during a fire is the most important factor for rapid fire suppression,” and added, “We ask for active participation and cooperation to eradicate illegal parking around fire hydrants so that firefighters can use them smoothly.”
