Hwang Chun-ja, People Power Party Yongsan District Mayor Preliminary Candidate, Meets Land Minister Nominee Won Hee-ryong at 10:20 AM on the 13th to Urge Prompt Undergrounding of Yongsan Station Area Elevated Railway and Residential Environment Improvement

Hwang Chun-ja, Yongsan District Mayor Preliminary Candidate, Proposes Undergrounding Yongsan Elevated Railway and Other Requests to Won Hee-ryong, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Nominee On the morning of the 13th, preliminary candidate Hwang Chun-ja is explaining the current issues in the Yongsan-gu area to Won Hee-ryong, the nominee for Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Hwang Chun-ja, the preliminary candidate for the Yongsan District Mayor from the People Power Party, met with Won Hee-ryong, the nominee for Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, at 10:20 a.m. on the 13th to discuss Yongsan District’s current issues, including the underground relocation of the aboveground railway at Yongsan Station and residential environment improvement.

On this day, candidate Hwang proposed to nominee Won Hee-ryong the urgent need to underground the aboveground railway, which has blocked regional revitalization for over 100 years due to urban space disconnection and environmental pollution, and to enhance urban regeneration and competitiveness.

Candidate Hwang led the promise of undergrounding the railway section from Seoul Station to Yongsan Station to Hangang-daero (securing 1 million pyeong of land) together with President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon as a policy committee member of Yoon Seok-yeol’s presidential campaign headquarters, following three seminars related to Yongsan development.

To study Yongsan’s environment and development, candidate Hwang established an urban content research institute and held three seminars in 2015, 2017, and 2018 with experts in transportation, urban management, and railways under the theme “Advanced Alternative Research for Yongsan Development,” discussing realistic alternatives to the stalled Yongsan development.

They have sought alternatives including diagnosis and solutions for Yongsan’s residential environment, modernization of railway facilities for Yongsan development, development of the Yongsan downtown area, and activation plans for the Itaewon tourist district and Yongsan tourism.

Additionally, candidate Hwang requested cooperation to prioritize improving residential and neighborhood environments by shortening the period of urban maintenance projects, which had been delayed due to political interests, and easing regulations related to reconstruction and redevelopment, as Yongsan District is the second most deteriorated area in Seoul with over 80% of housing older than 20 years and a high urban decline rate.

She also proposed promptly advancing the project to develop the Yongsan Railway Workshop site into an international business district, attracting Bogwang Station on the Shinbundang Line, establishing Manrijae Station on the Sinansan Line, creating a new exit at Namyeong Station, installing escalators at Sookmyung Women’s University Station, constructing a new entrance to Gangbyeonbuk-ro from Wonhyo Bridge, and expanding insufficient parking lots to build transportation infrastructure.
