Yonsei University Graduate School of Engineering, a Leader in Fostering Convergent Talent, Recruiting Fall 2022 New Students

The Department of Techno-Humanities at Yonsei University Graduate School of Engineering, which aims to cultivate experts by integrating humanities knowledge on the foundation of engineering and science technology, has announced the admission guidelines for new students for the 2022 academic year. Admission eligibility is open to all majors holding a bachelor's degree, and the curriculum is conducted in a format of completing lecture credits over four semesters.

In the digital era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, what matters is not researching what already exists but the ability to create what we do not yet have. Now, the important skill is not the technical representation but the creative thinking ability about what is needed and what to create.

In the distant past, personal conflicts were resolved by duels and collective conflicts by wars, which made the warrior-type human the ideal human model. It is said that people in the medieval era enjoyed a rich emotional life.

And the talent required in the present and future digital era is, unlike the past, a digital human type with imagination to research new things. The internet, which radically changed the world and humans, emerged, and with the use of mobile phones, communication among people transformed into a different form than before.

Now, to cultivate talents who can lead the era, convergence education has become essential, and attention is focused on techno-humanities as a leader in talent development.

The meaning of convergence education is to pursue individuality and diversity simultaneously, aiming to foster free thinking and knowledge. It emphasizes sentimental and emotional experiences based on humanism and means education that breaks down barriers between disciplines and academic fields.

Yonsei University Graduate School of Engineering established the Department of Techno-Humanities several years ago in 2016 and has been operating courses for convergence education. The Department of Techno-Humanities is a department that cultivates personnel who can acquire humanities knowledge based on natural sciences and engineering and contribute to industrial development, with 21 professors from engineering and humanities conducting major lectures.

The Department of Techno-Humanities at Yonsei University Graduate School of Engineering operates a formal master's program over four semesters, offering courses including urban architecture, history of science and technology, innovation management, big data, as well as Eastern and Western literature, philosophy, history, communication leadership, psychology, and mental health. Students can receive a master's degree in literature or engineering according to their choice. Currently, students of a wide age range, regardless of age or status, participate in a learning process where they share each other's thoughts and knowledge and converge.

There is a growing recognition across society that humanities literacy, which can read people's minds, is necessary to grow as managers and executives.

Regarding this, Professor Kim Hyun-jae, head of the Techno-Humanities major, said, "There have been many programs combining engineering and business administration, but the program combining humanities and engineering is led domestically by Yonsei University's Department of Techno-Humanities," adding, "It aims to cultivate convergence-type talents like Leonardo da Vinci, who led the Western Renaissance, and Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, a practical scholar of the late Joseon period."
