67.5 Billion KRW Support Over 5 Years, Training 30 Aerospace Master's and PhD Students
Positive Signs for Efforts to Attract 'Hangong Ujucheong' to Western Gyeongnam
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Gyeongsang National University’s ‘Research Center for Core Technologies of High-Reliability, Low-Cost, Low-Orbit Satellite Constellation Satellite Systems’ has been finally selected for the Ministry of Science and ICT’s ‘Future Space Education Center’ project.
The Ministry of Science and ICT designated Gyeongsang National University, Pusan National University, Sejong University, Inha University, and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) as future space education centers specializing in future space technology education and research.
The Satellite Systems Core Technology Research Center at Gyeongsang National University formed a consortium for space research and education with local governments such as Gyeongnam Province, Jinju City, and Sacheon City; five space-related companies including Hanwha Systems and Korea Aerospace Industries; the Korea Testing Laboratory located in Jinju Innovation City; and Pukyong National University.
Over the next five years, a total budget of 6.75 billion KRW will be secured, including 5 billion KRW from the national treasury, 1.25 billion KRW from local government support, and 500 million KRW from corporate support, to conduct intensive education on future space technologies through on-site practical training, employment support linkage, and international cooperation programs. The plan is to train 30 core experts at the master’s and doctoral levels.
Gyeongsang National University has specialized in the aviation field for over 30 years. In 2017, it attracted the country’s first Aviation Core Technology Leading Research Center (ERC), producing world-class research outcomes that enable linkage between fundamental and applied research in high-efficiency and safety aviation core technologies.
With the additional attraction of the Satellite Systems Core Technology Research Center, it has now established research and educational capabilities encompassing both aviation and space fields.
Furthermore, by hosting the research center in Western Gyeongnam, it is expected to contribute to the new government’s efforts to locate the ‘Aerospace Administration’ in Western Gyeongnam.
