[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Gyeongsangnam-do plans to start the road widening and paving construction between Gahoe and Sindeung (2) within the first half of this year.
Gyeongnam Province will expand the road with a total project cost of 23.7 billion KRW to enhance the road network in the western Gyeongnam area and improve dangerous road structures.
The road section under construction, Local Road No. 1089, connecting Hambang-ri, Gahoe-myeon, Hapcheon-gun to Sajung-ri, Sindeung-myeon, Sancheong-gun, is very narrow with a width of 5 meters.
The province reported that there is an urgent need for road maintenance due to the high risk of accidents caused by large vehicles passing each other or pedestrian safety accidents occurring in village sections.
Since March 2018, Gyeongnam Province has been conducting detailed design services for road structure improvement and road widening and paving.
After consulting with nearby residents and related agencies, the road zone decision (change) was announced in July 2021, and compensation for acquired land and obstacles has been underway since November 2021.
With a secured project budget of 1 billion KRW this year, road construction and construction project management services will commence within the first half of the year, and the project will proceed with budget secured according to the annual project plan, aiming for completion in 2027.
A provincial official anticipated that upon completion, the 3.09 km road section will be expanded to two lanes with increased width to prevent safety accidents, improve transportation convenience for residents of western Gyeongnam, and revitalize the local economy.
Heo Dongsik, Director of Urban Transportation Bureau, said, “We will do our best to secure the budget and manage the project to complete the construction early,” adding, “The planned local road project will transform the system from a supplier-centered road to a demand-centered road, considering vulnerable road users and ensuring the safety of wildlife movement to build a future-oriented and eco-friendly road.”
