[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Jeonnam Province announced on the 11th that it will operate a specialized historical interpretation program for related historical sites to promote the history of the May 18th Democratic Uprising and inherit the noble democratic spirit of May 18th.
This program aims to provide detailed explanations of Jeonnam's May 18th to residents, local youth, and tourists visiting the May 18th historical sites, so that they can understand the history correctly.
The May 18th Democratic Movement began in Gwangju in May 1980 but spread to various areas within Jeonnam Province, with many historical sites scattered throughout Jeonnam where people participated directly or indirectly.
In 2020, Jeonnam Province selected locations with high historical and cultural value and designated and maintained 25 sites across 8 cities and counties in the province as "Jeonnam Province May 18th Historical Sites." In 2021, 18 interpreters were trained, and the interpretation program will begin operation from the 18th.
If a group of five or more applies, interpreter support is available. To receive support, applications must be submitted to the respective city or county at least one week before the visit. Among the 8 courses operated by each city and county, explanations can be heard for up to two courses per day.
One interpreter is provided per 20 people, and applicants and interpreters can freely coordinate schedules, interpretation courses, and order.
A Jeonnam Province official said, "This will be an opportunity for residents and youth to correctly understand the history of May 18th in Jeonnam," adding, "We hope the May 18th historical sites will be utilized as educational resources in living historical sites."
