[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Kwon Seong-dong, elected as the next floor leader of the People Power Party, is a representative politician with a background in prosecution.
The newly appointed floor leader Kwon is from Gangneung, Gangwon Province, entered Chung-Ang University’s Department of Law, and passed the 27th Judicial Examination. He was a 17th class trainee at the Judicial Research and Training Institute, a classmate of Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon. He was discharged as a Navy lieutenant and later worked as a prosecutor at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office Special Division, Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office, and the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office. During the Lee Myung-bak administration, he served as the Blue House Legal Secretary before entering the National Assembly.
After being elected as a member of the 18th National Assembly through a by-election in October 2009, he succeeded in being elected for four consecutive terms in the 19th, 20th, and 21st National Assemblies. In the 20th National Assembly, he also served as the chairman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee. During the 21st general election, he was not nominated by the party but ran as an independent and won.
He became more famous for supporting President-elect Yoon Seok-yeol even before Yoon officially entered politics. After Yoon was selected as the People Power Party’s presidential candidate, Kwon simultaneously served as the party secretary-general and the head of comprehensive support for the election campaign committee. His term is one year.
