Frequent Outdoor Activities Season... Ensuring Safety for Bicycle Users and Efforts to Prevent Summer Disasters
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] The Daegu Regional Environmental Office has launched a month-long intensive inspection and maintenance campaign throughout April to prevent safety accidents and resolve inconveniences for users, anticipating an increase in visitors to the bicycle paths installed along the Nakdong River during the spring season, when outdoor activities are frequent.
The inspection of the Nakdong River bicycle paths follows the full transfer of river management authority from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to the Ministry of Environment starting this year. Consequently, the Daegu Regional Environmental Office has also taken over the management of flood control facilities, including river embankments and drainage facilities along the Nakdong River in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk areas, as well as the bicycle paths installed there.
Bicycle paths are among the most frequently used waterfront facilities installed along rivers, with usage peaking in spring. Therefore, thorough management and maintenance are necessary to ensure user safety and address any inconveniences.
Choi Jong-won, head of the Daegu Regional Environmental Office, stated, “As this is the first year the river management has been transferred from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the purpose of this inspection is for environmental office staff to personally ride bicycles and carefully examine the overall Nakdong River bicycle paths for user safety issues.” He added, “Local governments overseeing the Nakdong River will also participate in this inspection to take measures to improve convenience facilities such as restrooms and rest areas.”
In addition to the Nakdong River bicycle path inspection, the Daegu Regional Environmental Office plans to thoroughly inspect and maintain major river facilities such as embankments and drainage systems to prevent malfunctions caused by natural disasters like typhoons and heavy rains during the summer season.
Furthermore, to prepare for emergencies such as flood damage, the office intends to establish a seamless disaster management system by mutually supporting equipment, personnel, and materials with local governments in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, the Busan Regional Land Management Office, the Nakdong River Basin Office, and the Nakdong River Flood Control Office.
