[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Park Gisu, a preliminary candidate for mayor of Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, has promised to establish a ‘Public Nursing Home for the Elderly.’
On the 6th, candidate Park released a press statement saying, “Currently, the population ratio of those aged 65 and over in Nam-gu is 17.8%,” adding, “This is approaching 20%, which is the United Nations standard for a super-aged society.”
He continued, “Local governments must take the lead in preparing for this super-aged society, and the starting point is the establishment of a public nursing home for the elderly,” emphasizing, “The estimated budget for the Nam-gu Public Nursing Hospital is about 30 billion KRW, and this budget will be funded with 10% from the district and 90% from the national government.”
He also promised definite improvements in working conditions for staff, stating, “Those who work directly in the public nursing home, such as care workers, must be happy for the elderly under their care to be happy.”
He added, “Once the Nam-gu Public Nursing Home for the Elderly is established, the senior citizens residing in Nam-gu will be able to spend a comfortable and peaceful old age.”
Meanwhile, candidate Park currently serves as the representative of the Ahn Byung-ha Memorial Foundation and has held positions such as president of TBN Gwangju Traffic Broadcasting, chairman of the Nam-gu Volunteer Center in Gwangju, director of the Nam-gu Culture and Arts Center in Gwangju, and adjunct professor in the Department of Social Welfare at Honam University.
