[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] As Pusan National University decided to cancel the admission of Cho Min, daughter of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk, on the 5th, attention is turning to Korea University and Hanyoung Foreign Language High School.

Korea University has been conducting the admission cancellation review process for eight months but remains tight-lipped about the detailed schedule. A Korea University official said on the 6th, "I understand that the Admission Cancellation Review Committee is comprehensively discussing the matter, including the court ruling."

According to Korea University regulations, if a reason corresponding to "a significant defect is found in the application materials submitted for admission screening" occurs, it should be handled according to the procedures of the Admission Cancellation Review Committee.

Korea University conveyed to the Ministry of Education in April last year that it would take measures related to Cho’s admission fraud case "after the final ruling," but it has remained at a standstill for a year. Some expect that Korea University will discuss admission cancellation after Hanyoung Foreign Language High School corrects the student record. However, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education stated, "Since August 31 last year, Korea University has not requested student record materials from Hanyoung Foreign Language High School."

Hanyoung Foreign Language High School is also in the process of correcting Cho’s school life record. According to materials submitted by People Power Party lawmaker Hwang Bo-seung-hee from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, Hanyoung Foreign Language High School held an academic performance management committee meeting on the 23rd of last month to discuss the laws and procedures for reviewing the correction of Cho’s student record.

According to the Ministry of Education’s directive, if there is supporting evidence such as a court ruling, corrections can be made through the school’s academic performance management committee review. It is known that Cho’s student record at Hanyoung Foreign Language High School listed internships at Dankook University Medical Science Research Institute, Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Aqua Palace Hotel and InterContinental Hotel, and internship activities at Kongju National University Life Science Research Institute among the seven major false credentials.

Cho entered the Department of Environmental Ecology Engineering at Korea University in 2010 and was admitted through early admission to Pusan National University School of Medicine in 2015, but her admission was canceled after seven years. Cho passed the national medical licensing examination in January last year and worked as an intern at Hanil Hospital, but she is now at risk of losing her medical license due to the degree cancellation.

Pusan National University’s decision to cancel admission led to a legal battle as Cho filed a request for suspension of the enforcement of the cancellation. Cho’s legal representative said, "Canceling admission and ultimately invalidating the medical license based on career entries that did not affect the admission decision is an excessively harsh punishment for the applicant." In response, a Pusan National University official said, "We are reviewing the suspension request and will respond according to procedures."
