[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced on the 6th that Commissioner Kim Yong-rae participated in the "Advanced Technology and Intellectual Property Policy Dialogue" upon a special invitation from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

The event, held under the theme of "Advanced Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property Administration," was a discussion session attended by patent office heads from six countries: Korea, Singapore, Australia, Slovakia, Chile, and Morocco.

Commissioner Kim was specially invited to the policy dialogue in recognition of his proactive and future-oriented response to issues related to advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, and his contribution to leading the formation of new international norms in the digital era.

The policy dialogue was conducted in a format where the six patent office heads shared their opinions on three questions: ▲ the impact of digitalization and advanced technologies on intellectual property, ▲ the acceptance and changes of advanced technologies by intellectual property offices, and ▲ support measures by intellectual property offices for young people with outstanding ideas.

At the session, Commissioner Kim emphasized the need for proactive responses to areas difficult to protect under existing intellectual property systems amid the rapid transition to a digital society, and proposed innovative measures for patent administration.

In particular, he shared Korea Patent Office’s experience and know-how in utilizing artificial intelligence, gaining empathy and support from other participating patent office heads and intellectual property experts worldwide.

Previously, KIPO established and announced its future vision, the "Digital Intellectual Property Innovation Strategy," early last year to create an intellectual property system that actively responds to the digital transformation across the economy and industry.

Additionally, within the IP5, a consultative body of five advanced patent offices, KIPO launched the New Emerging Technologies/Artificial Intelligence (NET/AI) Task Force, which it has led for the past two years to enhance the consistency of patent examination systems for AI inventions and to provide appropriate protection by preparing the "New Emerging Technologies/Artificial Intelligence (NET/AI) Cooperation Roadmap."

Commissioner Kim Yong-rae stated, "It was rewarding to see WIPO member countries and intellectual property experts resonate with the patent administration innovation measures proposed by the Korean Patent Office, reflecting Korea’s proactive response to advanced technologies and digitalization. Moving forward, KIPO will lead international discussions to ensure that new technologies such as Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are protected through intellectual property rights and will continue to innovate patent administration."
