The 3rd Heuksan Hong-eo Slicing School Entrance Ceremony Held

30 Graduates in 3 Years... 14 Obtained Entry-Level Private Certifications

The 3rd Heuksan Hong-eo Slicing School Entrance Ceremony Held

[Sinan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] On the 1st, the entrance ceremony for the 3rd term Heuksan Hong-eo Slicing School was held on Heuksan Island, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do.

The 'Heuksan Hong-eo Slicing School' was started in 2020 under the supervision of the Heuksan branch of the Sinan-gun Tourism Association, and with continuous interest from local residents and outsiders, the number of students this term reached 30.

The Hong-eo Slicing School was initiated to resolve the problem of an aging or insufficient workforce for slicing Hong-eo during periods of increased orders, which led to missed timely sales, and as part of efforts to generate income for residents and promote seafood sales.

Now in its third year, the Hong-eo Slicing School has about 30 graduates, among whom 14 have obtained the beginner-level private certification for Hong-eo slicing.

Choi Seo-jin, head of the Heuksan Hong-eo Slicing School, said, “While operating the school, I have felt great fulfillment as I realized the status of Heuksan Hong-eo and the brand image of Sinan-gun have been elevated,” adding, “I hope more people safely learn Hong-eo slicing skills and contribute to the local economy.”

A county official stated, “The popularity of the Hong-eo Slicing School is increasing day by day, with the number of students nearly tripling compared to previous terms, so we plan to move to a larger venue,” and set the goal to “make Heuksan Hong-eo a K-fermented food that captivates the taste buds of people worldwide.”

Meanwhile, in Sinan-gun, 18 fishing vessels for Heuksan Hong-eo have secured a total allowable catch (TAC) of 583 tons and are currently operating, generating an annual auction revenue of 6 billion won.
