Ahn Min-seok Leads Beyond Margin of Error at 13.2%
But 33.7% Undecided... Higher Among 60+ and Women
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] In the upcoming June Gyeonggi Province gubernatorial election, support for Kim Dong-yeon, the leader of the New Wave Party, was found to be the highest when asked who should be nominated as the Democratic Party candidate.
On the 4th, Asia Economy commissioned Realmeter to conduct a public opinion poll from April 1 to 2 targeting 1,009 men and women aged 18 or older residing in Gyeonggi Province (90% mobile, 10% landline, automated response). When asked about the "suitability of Democratic Party candidates for Gyeonggi Province governor," Leader Kim received 28.9% support. Next was Democratic Party lawmaker Ahn Min-seok with 13.2%, and the gap between first and second place was outside the margin of error.
Following them were former Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young with 10.4%, former Blue House Senior Secretary for Political Affairs Choi Jae-sung with 5.4%, and Democratic Party lawmaker Cho Jung-sik with 4.5%. Other figures accounted for 3.9%, and undecided voters were 33.7%.
This is interpreted as Leader Kim having raised his recognition to a "presidential candidate level" by running in the last presidential election, and recently increasing expectations as the Democratic Party and New Wave Party merged.
Within the Democratic Party support base, support for Leader Kim was even higher at 40.9%. Next were lawmaker Ahn with 21.8%, former Mayor Yeom with 14.2%, former Secretary Choi with 6.8%, and lawmaker Cho with 5.3%, showing a similar trend.
The overall undecided response rate was somewhat high at 33.7%. In particular, among those aged 60 and older, 41.4%, and among women, 39.6% answered that they had no preferred candidate or did not know. Among the non-partisan group, 56.5%, People Power Party supporters 52.1%, and People Party supporters 47.8% also showed undecided responses.
This survey was conducted by Realmeter on behalf of Asia Economy from April 1 (Friday) to April 2 (Saturday). Calls were attempted to 77,535 eligible voters aged 18 or older in Gyeonggi Province, with a final 1,009 respondents completing the survey, resulting in a response rate of 1.3%. The survey used an automated response method with 90% mobile and 10% landline calls, employing random digit dialing sampling frames. Statistical adjustments were made using rim weighting by gender, age group, and region based on the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s resident registration population statistics as of the end of February 2022. The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
