[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] Pulmuone has completed its state-of-the-art tofu production line at its Beijing Plant 2 and is expanding its local business in China.
On the 3rd, Pulmuone announced that it had established Plant 2 with a cutting-edge packaged tofu production line on the site of its Beijing Pinggu (Pinggu) factory. Since the end of 2020, Pulmuone invested 30 billion KRW over one year and three months to complete Beijing Plant 2 in Pinggu District, a three-story building with a total floor area of 12,146 m² (3,674 pyeong), equipped with an environmentally friendly, fully automated production system and a cold chain (low-temperature distribution system).
The tofu production capacity at the Pinggu factory has expanded fourfold from the previous 15 million blocks to 60 million blocks annually. Pulmuone plans to produce packaged tofu, including ▲No tofu (for stir-frying and steaming), ▲Run tofu (for stews and hot pot), ▲Naiji tofu (for salads and bibimbap), ▲Tofu noodles, and ▲Soy milk at Plant 2.
Until now, Pulmuone’s fresh convenience food production base in China was Beijing Plant 1, completed in 2012. The production line, which started with fresh noodles, expanded to home meal replacement (HMR) products such as ▲Udon noodles, ▲Cold noodles and sauces, ▲Rice cakes, and ▲Pasta. Since September 2017, it has maintained an annual production system of 15 million packaged tofu blocks, supplying tofu products mainly to first-tier cities.
With the completion of Plant 2, Pulmuone plans to reorganize its production lines: the existing Beijing Plant 1 will become a dedicated production base for fresh HMR products such as refrigerated noodles and pasta, while the newly built Plant 2 will operate as a production hub focused on plant-based products centered on tofu.
Lee Hyo-yul, CEO of Pulmuone, said, "We plan to efficiently respond to the rapidly growing tofu demand in the Chinese market and expand the production of fresh convenience foods including tofu. Centered on Beijing Plants 1 and 2, we will accelerate growth in the Chinese market by establishing frozen and refrigerated HMR production bases in Chongqing, Shanghai, and southern regions in the future."
