'Overpowered by Young People'... 60s Man Using a Weapon Receives Suspended Sentence in First Trial

'Overpowered by Young People'... 60s Man Using a Weapon Receives Suspended Sentence in First Trial

[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] A man in his 60s who was indicted for stabbing a neighbor with a weapon after a physical altercation over parking issues received a suspended sentence in the first trial.

The Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Western District Court (Presiding Judge Moon Byungchan) announced on the 3rd that it sentenced Mr. A (65), who was charged with attempted murder, to three years in prison with a five-year suspension. Additionally, he was ordered to undergo probation for three years and attend 40 hours of alcohol treatment lectures.

The court stated, “The defendant stabbed the victim’s body with a weapon, attempting to kill the victim but failed, and this could have endangered a precious human life, thus the criminal responsibility is heavy. Considering the method of the crime and the attack areas, the nature of the offense is severe.”

However, the court explained the sentencing reasons, saying, “The defendant admitted the facts of the crime and is reflecting on his wrongdoing. He paid the victim 25 million won, reached a settlement with the victim, and the victim expressed that he does not wish for the defendant to be punished.”

In October of last year, Mr. A was arguing with a resident living in the same apartment over parking issues. At that time, the victim, Mr. B, passing by, said, “Why are you making so much noise at this late hour?” to stop them, and Mr. A responded, “Who do you think you are?” and got into a physical fight with the victim.

Mr. A, angered because Mr. B was younger and physically stronger, went into his home, came out with a weapon, and was charged with stabbing the victim multiple times. He is also accused of chasing after Mr. B, who tried to escape, and swinging the weapon again.
